- —Klonoa
Klonoa is the titular protagonist of Klonoa Heroes: Densetsu no Star Medal.
Personality
Klonoa is a boy who thrives to become a hero. Because of this, he has a strong sense of justice and is willing to do the right thing. While most of his other counterparts displayed a sense of maturity and levelheadednesss, in Klonoa Heroes, Klonoa has a bratty side and tends to be short-tempered. He dislikes those who call him a kid or look down on him, causing him to go through great lengths to prove them wrong. This can get him into serious trouble.
His determination won over the respect and admiration of several characters such as Lolo, Popka, Chipple, Guntz, and Pango. He is also capable of showing great respect to others who do heroic things, as seen when he showed Pango respect for his strength and when he called Lolo a hero for her role in saving the world. Klonoa is also shown to be kind-hearted. In Klonoa Heroes and Namco X Capcom, he protests against Joka's attempt of suicide, despite everything he did to him.
Abilities and Techniques
Wind Ring
Like his original counterpart, Klonoa's signature weapon of choice is his Wind Ring. With it, he is able to fire a blast of wind that damages enemies.
Dive Suit
Klonoa got the Dive Suit from the people of Jugkettle Sea to help him, Guntz and later Pango for both breathing and navigating underwater and in space.
Tornado Attack
The Tornado Attack is one of Klonoa's special attacks taught by Balue. Klonoa wanted to learn a special attack strong enough to beat Guntz. He claims that he can 'see the wind' and it inspired him to think up of the technique, which he named "Klonoa Tornado Attack". When using the attack, he flies in the air then unleashes a massive amount of tornadoes around him.
Thunder Hurricane
The second special from Klonoa Heroes and his ultimate assault in Namco X Capcom. In the Volk City level in Klonoa Heroes, Klonoa is defeated by Flower Joka and is thinking of a new attack. He then trips on a wire and gets electrocuted. This inspires him to create the 'Klonoa Thunder Hurricane'. When using the attack, he begins to spin as bolts of lightning spark around him.
Weaponry
Besides his Wind Ring, Klonoa has other five weapon types, all introduced in Klonoa Heroes and used in Namco X Capcom.
- Ring: Klonoa's default weapon, which fires a a Wind Bullet forward. He starts with his Wind Ring, and he can find stronger versions during his quest, such as the Gale Ring and Storm Ring.
- Sword: Besides creating the Wind Bullet, the Wind Ring can use the wind to create a Wind Sword to slash his enemies. Its range is shorter, but it can attack faster. It is his most used form of attack in other media, like commercials and artwork for the game. The first sword Klonoa finds is the Wind Sword in World 1.
- Hammer: A weapon used to smash his enemies, ignoring the defenses from Shield Moos. It is first found in World 3. In Namco X Capcom, Klonoa can use it to open chests without losing Action Points (AP).
- Parasol: A rod that can create a round energy field on one side, resembing a parasol. It can act like a shield against projectiles, and Klonoa can also use it to tackle enemies. The first parasol he can find is the Beam Parasol in World 4. In Namco X Capcom, it can also be used as a defensive counter against long-range attacks.
- Ball: A pair of cannons attached to each of Klonoa's arms that can fire a big spiked ball to his enemies. Like the Hammer, it ignores defenses. They are first found on World 5.
- Boomerang: A boomerang that rotates around Klonoa and hit anyone close to him, being able to hit multiple enemies. First found in World 6.
Story
Klonoa Heroes
The game began in an alternate universe, with Klonoa getting his Wind Ring from his grandpa. Soon after, he and Chipple were seen trying to pluck a special flower, the Radiant Flower from a tree branch. The flower was said to only bloom under special circumstances and the person who possessed it would be granted good luck. After getting the Radiant Flower, Klonoa wanted to give it to someone but was informed by Popka and Lolo that the area was surrounded by several Moos. He tried to fight them but got himself surrounded by Giant Moos. Just then, he was rescued by Guntz, who took the flower, but Klonoa stubbornly pursued him. He sought out Balue after Chipple referenced him as a joke. Klonoa fought Guntz and reclaimed the flower.
He met with Lolo who was about to leave for Sky Temple but not before he presented her the Radiant Flower, revealing she was the person he intended to give it too. Klonoa told Lolo for her journey that she needed good luck and she is touched by his gesture, as she leaves.
Together, Klonoa decided to leave with Guntz leave to pursue a bounty-hunting career to become a hero and gain a Hero Medal to prove it, as Guntz himself already had a Bronze one. Along the way, they ran into a large armadillo named Pango, a bomb expert who had a Silver Hero Medal and joined them because he wanted to cure his son, Borris, from a mysterious sleeping sickness. Klonoa finally obtained one Blank Hero Medal from the High Priestess and they all learned the sickness was part of a plot being conceived by the madman Garlen, who has joined forces with Joka and a new villain named Janga to bring Nahatomb back using Lolo as a power source and create a new empire. Klonoa "trained" under Balue and, together with Gantz and Pango, defeated all four of them, rescued Lolo and put an end to his sinister plans. During the final battle against Nahatomb, the medals of the three heroes turned gold, but after he was defeated, only Klonoa's own medal turned back to being blank.
After the defeat of Nahatomb, Klonoa tended to an unconscious Lolo, who wouldn't wake up, despite Klonoa calling her name repeatedly. However, she was then reawakened by the power of the Radiant Flower that Klonoa had with him and smiled as she brought up their promise to return home together, much to Klonoa's joy.
The extra visions have an additional story, where Mamett gathered together the remaining minions of the villains and decided to use them as new attractions for his tent. The trio of heroes, not knowing this, traveled to various places defeating every one of them. When arriving in Garlen's former lab, they find Mamett with his brother Momett and Balue. They explained to the heroes what happened, and Klonoa's Hero Medal turns back to gold.
Namco x Capcom
New monsters started appearing all over the world attacking people, as well as the strange "sleeping sickness". Guntz heard that the golden knight Gilgamesh (from the Tower of Druaga series) was involved in the fight and decided to take Klonoa with him for a bounty hunt, as the reward should be big if the legendary Golden Knight was involved. The two headed to the destroyed Tower of Druaga and defeated the monsters there with the help of Whirlo, Steven (from the Valkyrie series), Stahn and Rutee (from the Tales series).
They found Joka (the one responsible for the sleeping sickness), Gilgamesh and Ki (Tower of Druaga series) and defeated Joka in battle, discovering that the demon Druaga (Tower of Druaga series) was alive. Klonoa and Gantz decided to talk with The High Priestess and Lolo about Druaga's return. They tried to defend them from an invasion of Moo led by Janga, and managed to hold still until heroes from various worlds showed up. As it seemed, the worlds are all being fused into one because of a great conspiracy involving evil organizations from each world. Klonoa and Guntz joined forces with the heroes but occasionally left the group to pursue Janga. After Janga and Joka were killed, the duo remained in the group until the final battle against 99, the secret weapon of the Ouma organization (original from Namco X Capcom).
After all was over, Demitri (from the Darkstalkers series) threw a party at his castle, which ended up with everyone battling for fun. He revealed to Morrigan (Darkstalkers series) that he planned to use his new allies to fight Jedah (Darkstalkers series), who was coming back.
Relationships
Grandpa
Klonoa sees Grandpa as his caretaker and is touched when his elder prepared his clothes and bags for the journey with Guntz.
Balue
Klonoa goes to Balue for training in order to beat Guntz take back a flower once Chipple pointed him out. Balue was curious in Klonoa's reasons for getting stronger and tried to tease him by asking about his feelings for Lolo, since he intended to give her a flower. However, he was disappointed by Klonoa's answer but still helped him out.
Chipple
In the introduction, Chipple helped Klonoa in picking a flower he intended to give Lolo.
Lolo
Lolo is Klonoa's childhood friend. He intended to give her a Radiance Flower as gift for good luck before she went to the Sky Temple to begin her training. However, before he could give it to her a quest came up; Klonoa tried to give her the flower beforehand but a worried Lolo tells him to give her the present after he returns from his journey and has him promise to do so. Klonoa was surprised by the seriousness of her worry but appreciating her concern, he agrees to the promise and she is delighted. He also went through great lengths to get the Radiance Flower back from Guntz though was denied and went for training.
When asked by Balue if he liked Lolo, Klonoa confirmed that he does as they were friends, unaware of its true meaning. Once he confronted Guntz again, he was questioned by his reasoning for it as he states he promised Lolo that he'd return safely. Guntz teased Klonoa by calling him a romantic for his concern for Lolo. In the end, he gave her the flower and she was grateful for it as he smiles at her happiness. When she is kidnapped by Joka, he goes out of his way to save her and worries over her unconscious form. He then smiles at her after she wakes up and reminds him of their promise. While Klonoa considers her a friend, his actions were another indication that he has a crush on Lolo, and he may not know it himself as many characters hinted at it.
Guntz
Guntz has a rivalry with Klonoa after their first meeting, but slowly begins to open up to him and eventually ends up having a brotherly relationship with him, even saving Klonoa's life on the moon.
This relationship holds and grows even stronger in Namco x Capcom, first shown when Guntz expresses his concern in taking Klonoa along, telling him that "This time, the enemies are for real, and I'm not sure whether to take you along or not — it'll be dangerous". In the end, the two seem to share an unbreakable bond.
Pango
Pango is one of Klonoa's good friends. Pango needed help in curing his son's sickness while Klonoa wanted to rescue his friend Lolo after she was kidnapped. They cooperated well together before they confronted Garlen and his forces.
Joka
Joka is one of the four antagonists of the story making sure Janga successfully captured Lolo and brought her to the moon.
